Wolverine, Gulo gulo, Mustelidae

Wolverine, oil on board.

I have a fascination with wolverines. They are tough, independent creatures that have a reputation for being incredibly fierce. This reputation tends to ignore the fact that they are also highly social creatures that live in family groups, maintaining social interactions between siblings, parents and young throughout their lives.

The model for this particular painting comes from the Detroit Zoo where there are a couple captive wolverines. The poor things are in a tiny pen and constantly try to climb to high spots to look out and see what’s going on. Wolverines are meant to roam. They have enormous home ranges traveling miles every day and being penned up is like torture to them.
